Odoo 20: What's New and Should You Upgrade?

Odoo 20 came out in September 2026 and was presented at Odoo Experience in Brussels. It's a major version, so Odoo will give it standard support (bug fixes and security updates) until September 2029. The main new features are AI agents that can now create and update records, tighter rules in accounting, smarter stock and purchase suggestions, and an AI assistant that builds website pages. If you run Odoo 16 or 17, your version has already left standard support and an upgrade belongs in your plans for the coming months. On Odoo 18 or 19 you have time, and the right moment depends mostly on how much custom code your database carries.

Odoo 20 new features that matter to a business

Odoo's release notes list several hundred changes. These are the ones most companies will notice. Many sit in Enterprise apps (Accounting, Planning, Payroll, Studio), so check your edition before you plan around a feature.

AI agents

  • Agents that act: An AI agent can now create and update records when you ask, including from a file you upload such as a PDF of instructions. Agents can also be started by automated and scheduled actions, so a routine task can run without anyone opening a chat.
  • Plain-language automation: Odoo says you can describe a process in a sentence and the agent explains what it will do before it goes live. Odoo's examples include assigning leads and alerting on low stock.
  • Voice: You can dictate requests to an agent.
  • Outside AI tools: Your database can connect to external AI tools through MCP (Model Context Protocol). Odoo states these tools work within the access rights you've already set.
  • Credits: All AI features now need credits bought through Odoo's IAP service. Budget for them.

Accounting and finance

  • Bank entries come from the bank: Every journal entry that touches a bank account must now originate from a bank transaction. Teams that post manual entries straight to the bank account will need a new habit.
  • Chart of accounts: Parent accounts replace account groups, and account codes become optional. Reports and exports built on the old groups need a check.
  • Assets and expenses: Asset models are replaced by depreciation models, and approved employee expenses now create draft vendor bills.
  • Currency differences: A new Cumulative Translation Adjustment line absorbs differences between historical and closing exchange rates. This matters for any company that reports in more than one currency.
  • Paying and chasing: You can pay bills one by one or in batches from Odoo through payment initiation service providers (where your bank supports it) and send customer invoice reminders by hand or automatically. The AI assistant can answer questions about your finances from your own accounting data.

Inventory and purchasing

  • Reordering suggestions: Odoo now suggests minimum and maximum stock levels for reordering rules, based on demand history, the days of cover you want and how often you order.
  • Vendor bills: Matching bills to purchase orders shows a clear summary, warns when price or quantity differ and lets you undo a match. When you encode a bill, Odoo suggests product, account, tax and analytic lines from your bill history.
  • Stock control: You can see stock at a past date, add landed costs to specific products and follow lots and serial numbers both ways in one traceability report.

Sales, eCommerce and Point of Sale

  • Prices and taxes: Sales orders, purchase orders and invoices can switch between tax-included and tax-excluded prices.
  • Point of Sale: One shop can now take several currencies at checkout. At the end of a session Odoo creates a single global sale, which simplifies the accounting entries.
  • Online shop: Customers can request returns from their portal and choose a delivery date, and business buyers can confirm an order and pay on invoice.

HR, payroll and planning

  • Attendance: A photo can be taken at check-in when the device has a camera, flexible staff can set an automatic check-out time and a new report explains overtime.
  • Payroll: A step-by-step pay run workflow, salary simulation from a net amount, and new options for when payslips are sent. Saudi payroll gets GOSI updates and the UAE gets an Emiratization compliance report.
  • Planning and field service: The Field Service app has been discontinued and its features moved into Planning. If your technicians use Field Service today, plan time to retrain them. Shifts can now take several people and be sent by WhatsApp.

Website

  • AI Website Assistant: It can create new pages from a prompt, edit forms and change menus.
  • Search and AI visibility: Structured data is added to pages by default, and you can publish an llms.txt file that helps AI tools understand your site.

If your database is on Odoo Online, you may already have seen some of these in the 19.1 to 19.4 online versions. Odoo 20 brings them to every hosting type.

What changes for custom modules and integrations

A custom module is code written for your company that changes how standard Odoo behaves. Every major version changes parts of the framework underneath, and the Odoo 20 developer changelog lists several changes that can break code written for older versions:

  • Files and images: Attachments, images and other binary fields are now handled as a new object type, and the format used to send them through the API has changed. Integrations that read or upload files (EDI, e-invoicing, document scanners, your online store) need testing.
  • Access rules: Access rights and record rules are merged into a single mechanism. Custom security rules that decide who sees which records need a review.
  • Web layer: Odoo now runs on a new HTTP server, and website context is passed to models in a different way. Custom web pages, portals and website modules may need changes.
  • Reports built on database views: A technique many custom reports relied on (_table_query) has been removed.
  • Change history: The stored records of field changes in the chatter have been replaced by messages generated on the fly. Reports that read that history directly need adapting. Odoo provides a separate module for admins who still need the old values.

According to Odoo's upgrade documentation, a database with custom modules can't be upgraded until those modules exist for the target version, and fixing a customization that the new version breaks is the job of whoever maintains it. So before anyone sets a date, someone has to read your custom code against Odoo 20 and say what moves over, what needs rewriting and what you can drop because Odoo now does it as standard.

Who should upgrade now and who can wait

Odoo supports every major version for three years of standard support. Security updates are only provided during that period. After it, extended support is available for an extra fee, only on Odoo.sh (for a limited number of versions) and on your own servers.

Your versionEnd of standard supportWhat we'd suggest
Odoo 16September 2025 (ended)Plan the upgrade now. You no longer get security updates without paid extended support.
Odoo 17September 2026 (ended)Start with a test upgrade this quarter.
Odoo 18September 2027 (planned)Upgrade in 2027 at the latest. Earlier if you want the new features.
Odoo 19September 2028 (planned)No rush. Move when a feature or a business reason justifies it.

Where your database is hosted also sets the pace:

  • Odoo Online: On a major version, an upgrade is mandatory every two years. Odoo notifies you a few weeks before, and if you don't act by the deadline the upgrade runs automatically.
  • Odoo.sh: After the three years of standard support you have two more years to complete the upgrade, and Odoo notifies you when it's required.
  • Your own servers: You can stay on a version as long as you like, without security updates once support ends. The bigger the gap between versions, the harder the upgrade gets.

With heavy custom code or a year-end close coming up, waiting a few months for the first round of Odoo 20 fixes is reasonable. On 16 or 17 with little custom code, there's less reason to wait.

How an Odoo upgrade runs

  1. Review your custom modules and integrations against the new version.
  2. Request an upgraded test copy of your database. Emails, payments and bank synchronization are switched off on it, so nothing reaches customers or banks.
  3. Bring the custom modules to Odoo 20 and install them on the test copy.
  4. Test your real processes from end to end, from purchase to invoice, credit note and reports, plus your integrations.
  5. Train your users on what has changed, especially accounting staff and anyone who used Field Service.
  6. Rehearse, then go live at a quiet time. The production database is unavailable while it upgrades, and once done you can't return to the previous version.

Risks to plan for

  • Custom code that isn't ready: This is the usual cause of delays. Nobody can upgrade the database until every custom module has an Odoo 20 version.
  • Changed habits in accounting: The bank, asset and expense changes alter daily work, so let the team practise on the test copy first.
  • Integrations: Payment gateways, e-invoicing and anything that exchanges files through the API.
  • Data you never cleaned: Odoo's upgrade service doesn't clean old data or configuration. Duplicates and half-finished setups move with you.
  • Training: It isn't included in Odoo's upgrade service either.
  • New running costs: AI features use paid credits, and some features need Enterprise apps.

FAQ

Is Odoo 20 stable enough for production?

It's a major release with standard support until September 2029, and Odoo keeps publishing fixes for it. A standard database with little custom code can move once you've tested your processes on a copy. With many custom modules or integrations, a few months of fixes and a careful test cycle lower the risk.

How long does an Odoo upgrade take?

It depends on your custom modules, your integrations, the amount of data and how many versions you're jumping. A standard database mostly needs time for testing and training. Heavily customized systems take longer, because the code has to be rewritten and tested before the database can move.

Can I skip versions, for example from Odoo 16 straight to 20?

Yes. Odoo lets you upgrade from any version to any major version still under standard support, so you don't have to stop at 17, 18 and 19 along the way. The bigger the jump, the more there is to check.

Will my customizations still work after the upgrade?

Studio customizations are upgraded by Odoo while Studio stays installed and your subscription is active. Modules written by your team, a partner or a third party need to be adapted to Odoo 20 by whoever maintains them, unless they're covered by an Odoo maintenance of customizations subscription.

Is upgrading different for Odoo Community and Enterprise?

Yes. With Enterprise, Odoo upgrades the standard apps for free as part of your subscription, with support for issues in the upgraded database. Community databases aren't covered by that service, so your own team or a partner does the work, often with OpenUpgrade, an open-source project of the Odoo Community Association. Moving from Community to Enterprise is a separate project.

What drives the cost of an Odoo upgrade?

Mostly the number and size of your custom modules and integrations, then the volume and state of your data, how many versions you're jumping, and the testing and training your team needs. The upgrade of Odoo's standard apps is included in Enterprise. Custom code, data cleanup and training are the parts you pay for.
